How to Set Up Practical Changing Stations Around Your Home

Preparing for a New Baby

Babies do three main things: eat, sleep and poo. So it’s no surprise that one of the biggest parts of preparing for a new baby is getting your changing setup sorted.

Changing stations might sound excessive, but hear me out. Having a few well-thought-out changing spots around your home is one of the ultimate hacks for those early months. It saves time, energy and a lot of unnecessary back-and-forth when you’re tired and juggling a newborn.

Here’s how we recommend setting things up.

Main Changing Area: Upstairs / Nursery

For the first six months, the nursery is often more decorative than practical — except when it comes to changing. This will likely be your main changing area.

A well-stocked changing table makes all the difference. Think:

  • Nappies
  • Wipes
  • Creams
  • Muslins
  • A couple of outfit changes

This is where a Wedge Baby Changing Mat really comes into its own. It’s supportive, comfortable and designed for longer, more regular changes. Perfect for your main setup where you’ll spend the most time. With over 40 designs, we have something to suit every nursery theme perfectly.

Downstairs Changing Station

Save your legs and your sanity by setting up a simple changing station downstairs.

A small changing caddy stocked with:

  • Nappies
  • Wipes
  • Muslins
  • One or two spare outfits

Paired with a standard changing mat works brilliantly here. Our standard mats are full-size but slim enough to slide under the sofa, tuck down the side of furniture, or store neatly until you need them. They’re practical, easy to grab in a hurry, and come in neutral patterns that sit nicely in any living space.

Travel Mats: The Unsung Hero

Travel changing mats are the real MVPs of those early months.

We’re talking:

  • In the nappy bag
  • In the car
  • In changing caddies around the house
  • Taking to the hospital so you can change baby on the bed
  • Even keeping one by your own bed for middle-of-the-night changes

Our Travel Changing Mats are super lightweight, fold up compactly, and are endlessly useful. You’ll reach for them far more than you expect — easily one of the most-used baby items in the early days.

Setting up your changing stations before baby arrives means one less thing to think about once you’re home and finding your rhythm. Having the right mat in the right place makes everyday moments that little bit easier, and when you’re running on very little sleep, that matters more than anything.

We also offer Changing Mat Bundles so you can get the full setup in one click!
